Series: Dorothy Must Die (Book 1)
Hardcover: 464 pages
Publisher: HarperCollins; First Edition edition (April 1, 2014)
I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero. But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?
Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still a road of yellow brick—but even that's crumbling.
What happened? Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.
My name is Amy Gumm—and I'm the other girl from Kansas. I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked. I've been trained to fight. And I have a mission: Remove the Tin Woodman's heart. Steal the Scarecrow's brain. Take the Lion's courage. And—Dorothy must die.
Have you ever watched the Wizard of Oz and had the thought occur to you that Dorothy was a real bitch to tell Scarecrow that she'd miss him most of all?
Well have no fear because in Dorothy Must Die, she takes bitch to a bonkers new level.
Amy Gumm is the third Kansas citizen to come flying into Oz via a tornado and it is actually a nice change of pace to the disaster of her home life. Her mom is a drunk and her only friend is her rat Star. "Salvation Amy" a nickname so loving given to her by her enemy, is facing some major drama as she has to deal with a new reality of the famous book.
Yes the book is canon and hilariously so as it gets flipped completely upside down.
Everyone good is now an absolute horror and it all starts at the top with Dorothy who is sucking up all of Oz's magic for herself. The bitch gotta go.
So it is a group of witches and Amy who make it their mission to kill Dorothy and take back what is theirs.
Knox, bless him, really adds some ummpph to this. This is a fun solid read though with characters you grew up loving just having a nasty edge.
Also, I'm pretty sure Toto has rabies.
